Lego Custom minifig vandel

(Lego Custom minifig vandel by Blue Bard)

I wanted to show you all, this particular custom minifig, not jsut because its a good custom minifig with a great custom Decal on the Lego head. But because it shows two very interesting elements of custom minifig building- first is decals- if you look closely at the torse of this Lego custom minifig, you’ll see that the decal is actually made of paper (and presumabally stuck on), what this illustrates is that anyone can create good looking decals, and you don’t really need to have any special equipment to do it.

Secondly, this Lego custom minifig is clearly a vandel who has just spray painted the wall behind, which highlights something usually over looked – Lego minifigs, be they standard minifgs or custom minifigs, can enhance and work with a Lego MOC to create something ‘real’ they add action and realism to a Lego construction, which would otherwise look bland and uninteresting.

Lego Books

Being a fan of Lego, and trying to find more about Custom Lego minifigs, I decided that doing some back ground research would help inspire custom minfig designs and educate on what to consider when building custom minifigs. It’s often worth doing some background reseach when taking on any project, and Lego minifig customization is no different, there are a whole range of Lego books out there, some are educational, whilst others are more instructional and will benefit any Lego projects you take on, however in terms of books specific to Lego minifig customization, there isn’t any written book about this area of Lego customization, however you’ll find most of this information online and of course, here, at customminifig

Nevertheless heres a slide show of books relating to Lego customization as well as vinyl figures (another area that Lego minifig customization would cross over)

Mini Figure customizing equipment

Customizing Mini figures doesn’t need to be complex, it can be as simple and changing the head of a Lego minifig, however to create some of the real master pieces, you’ll want to get properly tooled up.

The basics are-

  • smooth grade sand paper
  • sharp scalpel and cutting mat
  • Milliput (white)
  • Super glue
  • plastic cement glue
  • spare Lego Bits
  • metal ruler
  • spare loose wire
  • small hand drill (micro drills)
  • Dentists tools
  • acrylic or oil based model paints
  • super thin paint brushes
  • plastic card
  • super small rubber bands
  • Kneadatite -epoxy putty

As you can see making more complex mini figures is no small feat it takes a lot more effort and is akin to building full blown models, there are elements of sculpting and painting that are involved and you’ll need a lot of patience, but if you’ve got the mind to persevere, you can create such wonders and these Gears of war Lego minifigs created by Hong Kong Based Hazel, one of the top Lego minifig customizers.
