Custom minifig modding – arms

One of the difficult things about Lego is the fixed range of motion the Minifigs have, the arms for example only move up and down, which can be severely limiting, custom minifig builders have sought all sorts of ways to get around this and give custom minifigs a wider range of movement. Here’s a video of a custom minifig being modded to allow for the arms to have that additional movement that it sometimes needs.

These two photos show how main stream media has clearly had an impact on the way Lego minfig builders have translated this into Lego, Steve Jobs is shown in the second photo with a minfig ipod, whilst the first photo shows a beautiful white minifig with the distinctive click wheel of the ipod as a decal on it. This actually speaks volumes about how to build custom minifigs, because Lego simplifies things, any custom parts also need to be simplified to the core basics to illustrate the object and make it recoginzable, if the object was to be designed too detailed it wouldn’t work well with Lego, if it was too simplified it wouldn’t be recognizable.

Because most custom minifig and Lego fans are dotted around the world, and conventions aren’t always accessible, most Lego custom minifig fans gather on online forums and sites such as customminifig.co.uk, as a result a tradition has developed in producing a ‘sig fig’ or sinature custom minifig, this is usually the makes best or favourate piece, but could also be a Lego interpretation of the maker, similar to the Lego business cards Lego staff get.

This particular sig fig was made by minifig, and here it’s shown as part of a vignette, the detail is great especially the lamp, mug, computer and camera in the back ground.

Lego Custom minifig engraving and printing

Lego Custom minifig engraving and printing

(Lego, Custom, minifig, engraving, printing, decals by brickengraver.com)

Whilst this image really doesn’t do this justice, you have to look at a larger image to really appreciate what is so unique about the images on theses Lego minifigs. When you do however you’ll notice that the images on these Lego custom minifigs are actually engraved rather than decals, pictures on the slab like magazines are photo printed directly onto the Lego surface, which is why there is so much detail and I think they look great, however I’m still unsure how long lasting printing directly onto Lego would be, after all you’d need a special kind of ink to keep it on the Lego surface. Definitely worth checking out if you can, and ignore the poor quality site. Check out  brickengraver.com here.
