Cool Lego custom minifig Samuri Jack

samurai jack lego custom minifig

(Lego custom minifig by ImpreSariO)

This awesome samurai minfig was custom made by ImpreSariO a very talented custom minifig builder, the inspiration for the custom minifig samurai was from samurai Jack a cartoon network TV series, whats really fantastic about the custom minifig, is the legs made from Lego bricks, see Lego actually have a range of samurai minifigs, and the legos could have been made using fabric, but this custom minifig is unique in the use of Lego bricks for this purpose, and I think you’ll agree it’s every effective is presenting a strong, bold and stylized feel to this custom minifig.

Additionally the custom minifig face is a custom decal that uses manga illustrations and is really effective, for a minifig with no other markings the face decal really expresses the personality of the minifig and the use of a four by one flat as a sword sheath is pretty cool too!

Lego Custom minifig project planning

Building custom minifigs isn’t difficult however you need to do a little planning before hand especially if its a big project and you want to get quality results. True, you can customize a minifig with a felt tip pen, but if you’re like me and a bit of a perfectionist you’ll probably want to get really high quality professional results, and that will cost you a bit of money and take a bit of time, hence you’ll need to do some planning to make sure you minimize any mistakes.

Step 1

The first thing to do when starting a custom minifig project is to decide what you want, whats your custom minifig idea? You want spend a little time to basically try and describe what you want to achieve, there are several different styles of minifig customization, usually determined by the ‘time period’, eg modern, western, town, military, mech, and so forth, each kind of minifig customization has a different style and a method of customization so its worth considering which your custom minifig will fall into.

Step 2

Design, just because its a custom minifig doesn’t mean it’s not worth doing a few sketches over, its often worth just getting the initial concept down on paper get a feel for the colours you’re going to use, if you’re going to make custom decals to go on the minifig you’ll want to draw those out as well, if you have some building tools (there are several programs on the web which are free) you may want to get those out so you’ve got a clear plan of action and know exactly how your custom minifigs are going to look before you’ve spent your well earned cash.

Step 3

Finding the right parts and identifying what you need to get/do, this is probably the most important part of making a custom minifig. This is where you need trawl the web to find the parts to make your custom minifig, you might find a minifig body that means you don’t need to create a custom minifig decal, or you might find that you’ll need to build a custom part of some sort, it’ll also give you a chance to refine your custom minifig design. In terms of where to look for custom minifig parts, check out our custom minifig store guide for the best retailers of custom minifig parts. When looking for custom minifig parts make sure you shop around for a good price and make sure you know what you are looking for before commiting to getting anything custom made for your custom minifig, often you might be able to get away with a standard minifig torso, rather than shelling out on a custom minifig decal.

Step 4

The Build, this is obviously very important to how your custom minifig will look, as such you need to take your time putting together your custom minifig, make sure you get it right and minimize mistakes, work in an area with good ventilation and light and make sure you keep your area tidy, only work on one part at a time, many minifig customizers tend to have a bits box where they keep left over parts from other custom minifig projects, you can use these to help with your build and naturally if you have any left over custom minifig bits just stick them in your bits box. It’s often worth taking a few photos of your custom minifig as a work in progress as this helps others see how you put the custom minifig together and can offer plent of feed back, this is particularly useful if the custom minifig you’re working on is a bit of a master piece.

Step 5

Finishing touches, if you’re anything like me you won’t stop working on a minifig even when its done, but essentially this stage is where you finish op, work on all the details and check your custom minifig, then make sure you take photos and stick them up all over the web for other custom minifig fans to comment, this feed back from other minifig fans can be very useful for your next project but do take it with a pinch of salt.

Lego Universe

From Contagious 2008 -

Set for a 2009 release, LEGO Universe is another new MMOG. Developed by NetDevil to be a seamless
adaptation of the LEGO philosophy, the concept behind the subscription-based LEGO Universe is simple – if you can imagine it, then you can build it. The traditional play experience will transfer online, requiring a creative and collaborative approach to accomplish ingame goals. Contagious 17 contains a case study on LEGO.

You can find the site here. From What I can tell its going to be a secondlife style game for Lego minifig fans.

One that is particularly relevent for custom minifig fans will be the feature that allows you to customize your own custom minifig. Taken from the Lego site:

Design your own minifigure – Upon landing in LEGO Universe, you’ll choose from hundreds of options to customize your tiny in-game characters.

Additionally you can play games, interact with others and build items and the game features an overarching epic storyline about the origins of LEGO Universe and the minifigures that inhabit it. In the story of LEGO Universe, the minifigures can team up to quest together. If the teams are successful, they’ll uncover new game zones featuring original characters, more building opportunities, and undiscovered creative challenges!

The Arrival of BrickArms Custom minifigs and weapons

I arrived home today to a small nondescript package with a little sticker on the bottom the sticker sad minifigforlife, so after a long day at the office my spirits were lifted, just time for Christmas and a few weeks off. This is the first time I’ve received anything from Brickarms and Minifig for life so I was eager to check out the merchandise that to be fair, its the cheapest items you can buy.

Opening up the white bubble wrapped envelope each order was packaged in a clear mini ziplock bag, with the mini fig separate from the weapons that came along with that particular minifig. Each packet also came with photo/printed label of the order and minifig, and there weren’t any instructions (not that you would need any).

upon opening the first item, the Mr White that I was very keep to get my hands on (i suspect this will eventually be a collectors custom minifig in the future) I was very impressed with the decals, BrickArms claim that the decals are delecate and as such these custom minifigs aren’t playable minifigs, but collectors minfigs, meant to be looked at rather than played with. All the joints on the minifig were stiff and solid, and there were no chips or scratches on the minifig, which was great. Suffice to say this minifig was in pristine condition.

On to the weapons, I’d orders as many items as I could from Brickarms before they temporarily shut shop, may main worry was cause of the media attention that had brought them into Lego’s radar there might have been some implications which might have meant you wouldn’t be able to get ahold of any of these minifigs or minifig weapons. (lucky that proved to be wrong!)

The minifig weapons are really well made, the level of detail and the finish on them is supurb, and because they are made from the same plastic as Lego minifigs, which gives them a ridged and strong quality that hints at quality. SO after stashing a few of these minifigs away unopened I’ll definately be ordering a few more and begin work on my custom Lego minifig british army chess set!
